Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

More commonly referred to as OCD, this mental health condition is characterised by obsessive and compulsive behaviours.

Obsessive thoughts, urges or images enter the mind, causing unease and anxiety. A compulsion is a repetitive act that will help relieve these obsessive thoughts. And this can significantly interfere with daily routines and quality of life.

Conventional Treatments Options

There are a few ways to help manage some of the symptoms of OCD. This can include:

  • Psychological therapies, especially CBT with exposure and response prevention
  • Medication, such as SSRIs
  • Finding a good support network

Although some people may find relief with a combination of the above, for others it simply isn’t enough.

Can medical cannabis help?

Research into medical cannabis and OCD is still ongoing. But here’s what we do know: cannabis-based medicines may contain THC and/or CBD, two compounds that can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This is a complex network involved in regulating pain, mood, sleep, and more. And, it’s why medical cannabis may potentially help manage OCD symptoms.

Keep in mind that effects can vary and more evidence is needed to confirm how medical cannabis could potentially help ease OCD symptoms.

Possible side effects

Medical cannabis is prescribed under specialist supervision, and patient experience can vary. Just like with any medication, there are possible side effects. These include:

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Hunger
  • Changes in mood

They’ll usually go away on their own, but speak to your clinician if they don’t improve over time.
