Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation in the digestive tract.

This lifelong condition can flare-up at any time, with symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss, and reduced appetite. And this can massively affect overall quality of life.

Conventional Treatments Options

There are a few ways to help relieve some of the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease. This can include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medicines such as corticosteroids
  • Immunosuppressants which control the immune response
  • Biologic therapies that target specific pathways
  • Nutritional support and dietary changes
  • Surgery in severe cases to remove damaged sections of the bowel

The aim of these treatments is to reduce inflammation and maintain remission.

Although some people may find relief with a combination of the above, for others it simply isn’t enough.

Can medical cannabis help?

Research into medical cannabis and Crohn’s disease is still ongoing. But here’s what we do know: cannabis-based medicines may contain THC and/or CBD, two compounds that can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This is a complex network involved in regulating pain, mood, sleep, and more. And, it’s why medical cannabis may potentially help manage Crohn’s disease symptoms.

Keep in mind that effects can vary and more evidence is needed to confirm how medical cannabis could potentially help ease Crohn’s disease symptoms.

Possible side effects

Medical cannabis is prescribed under specialist supervision, and patient experience can vary. Just like with any medication, there are possible side effects. These include:

  • Dry mouth and dry eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Hunger
  • Changes in mood

They’ll usually go away on their own, but speak to your clinician if they don’t improve over time.
