Even though medical cannabis has been legally available on prescription since 2018, it can still feel like a tricky topic to bring up. Whether it’s chatting with friends, family, or even your GP, knowing what to say isn’t always easy. But, having an honest conversation, even if it's a little awkward, can make a big difference.

What can you say?

Here are a few easy ways to start the conversation:

  • “Medical cannabis supports my well-being. It’s been an interesting journey!”

  • “Have you ever heard about how the body’s endocannabinoid system works? It’s fascinating!”

  • “I consume medical cannabis as part of my treatment. I'm happy to answer any questions if you’re curious.”

Start small, with people who care about you, like friends and family members, and keep it simple: “I am a medical cannabis patient.”

Expect questions, and look at the positive side to this. It shows people are curious, and it’s your chance to explain how medical cannabis helps you.

Make it personal, and share your experience.

A simple way to explain the science

You can also mention the endocannabinoid system (ECS)! Think of the ECS as your body’s “internal balance system.” It helps regulate things like mood, sleep, and comfort. Medical cannabis can interact with the ECS, supporting your overall sense of well-being. Mentioning it this way makes the conversation educational but still easy to understand.

Pro tip: showing your prescription or product label can help others understand and feel reassured.

What if they react badly?

Remember: this is your treatment, your choice, and it’s legal. Your prescription is your main authority under Regulation 10 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations, allowing you to possess a prescribed controlled substance.

Remember

Starting conversations is the only way to break the cannabis stigma - which today is mostly outdated views. Sharing stories creates awareness, and this does make a difference.
